Information

Audio transmission signals can be generally divided into analog signals and digital signals. What are they? What is the difference between them? And what are their advantages and disadvantages? Wish this article finds you the answer!

What are They?

An Analog signal refers to an audio signal in which the original waveform is amplified in strict proportion and recorded on the medium.

Digital signal refers to the audio signal recorded by quantization. The quantization process is a process that transforms the signal amplitude that changes continuously with time into discrete values.

Four Main Differences Between Them:

1. An analog signal is continuous while the digital signal is time-separated.

2. An analog signal is denoted by sine waves and digital by square.

3. An analog signal has no fixed range. But the digital signal has finite numbers 0 and 1.

4. The analog signal processing can be done in real-time. But digital signals can not guarantee that.

Advantages & Disadvantages:

Since analog signals are easier to process, microphones that output analog signals like BoomX-U can compatible with various devices.

However, there are two obvious disadvantages of analog signals:

1. Audio cables that adopt analog technology are sensitive to external interference.

2. It is quite difficult to synchronize analog audio.

Microphones that output digital signals, such as BoomX-D UC/MI, can perfectly copy binary-encoded audio signals, and all "uneven" signals can be recorded and read accurately.

But the systems and processing will be more complicated since microphones that output digital signals need a larger bandwidth.

This is all about analog and digital signals in this article!
